I got hooked on weather when I was 4 years old. One afternoon in May the sky turned black outside my house in the suburbs of Minneapolis. My older brothers and sister were home from school, and it began to rain. Then
baseball-sized hail began to pound the ground. I wore my big brother's football helmet outside for protection as I put hailstones into a bowl for safe keeping in the freezer. It sounded like hammers hitting my head.
Then the sky turned an eerie shade of green. That's when things got really weird. The back door flew open and my mom shouted out "You kids get in the basement right now! Your father called, and he said there's a tornado coming!"
I watched out the basement window as black and green clouds swirled overhead. Then it was gone. My house was okay, but when our family took a drive to a neighborhood nearby, the houses were gone. I just remember thinking; "Oh my god, what did this?"
Paul Huttner
My father Vern Huttner fueled my interest in weather at an early age. Vern was a volunteer pilot for the Civil Air Patrol and taught me quite a bit about weather. In fact the whole Huttner family is a bit "weather crazy." Watching storms is always a favorite at family gatherings.
